Safety tips for all cyclists

  • Always wear a helmet to protect your head.
  • Wear bright colored or reflective clothing, so you're visible to motorists.
  • Wear eye glasses and gloves.
  • Stop to use a cell phone.
  • Use your rear brake as the primary brake.
  • Keep your bike tuned well for safe operation.
  • Take extra equipment including:
    • Bike multi-tool
    • First aid kit
    • Sunscreen
    • Tire lever tool
    • Tire air pump
    • Tube patch kit
    • Spare tube
    • Extra batteries for lighting
    • Bike lock
  • Take hydrating fluids and quick energy food.

Safety when on the road

  • Obey all traffic laws.
  • Ride on the right side of the road, in the same direction as traffic.
  • Keep to the right, but occupy the whole lane when that is the only safe option.
  • Use proper hand signals to communicate turning and stopping.
  • Help other cyclists by pointing out hazards.
  • Have a working headlight and taillight for bike rides in heavy traffic, dawn, dusk, and night.
